Auto Repair

There are simple techniques in basic auto repairs. In this form I will explain these basics. These are simplistic like oil change and recharging your car battery.

This is not intended to supply information on extremely complexed auto repairs. This is just general information for all to be able to know how to fix very easy repairs and avoid the cost of a mechanic when the repair is so simple.

Some of these basic repairs are:

Battery Recharging

Oil Change

Air Filter

Tune Up

Battery Recharging-Simply Clamp The red clamps on the jumper cables to the positive terminals on the two batteries that you are clamping to for the purpose of sending electric current to the dead battery.

Then Clamp the 2 black clamps to the negative terminals on the 2 car batteries.

Make sure that the vehicle that has the charged battery is running not to drain electricity out of the good battery.

Oil Change- Under the vehicle you will see the oil pan. Somewhere on the oil pan there will be a bolt that screws into the pan. You will need to find the right socket or boxed end wrench to unscrew this bolt. Make sure you have an oil pan below this bolt before unscrewing. After the pan is put into place carefully unscrew the bolt. The oil should pour out. Next look under the hood for the oil filter. This filter unscrews from the engine. Take an oil filter wrench and unscrew this filter and replace it with a new filter. Before putting the new filter on rub a little oil around the rubber washer that is attached to the end of the new filter. Put the new filter on, careful not to cross thread it.

Screw the bolt back on the oil pan and apply fresh oil to the engine.

Air Filter- On the very top of the engine sits the air filter canister. The lid on top of the canister should be attached with a butterfly nut.

Unscrew this butterfly nut, take the lid off and replace the old air filter with a new one.

Tune Up- A tune up means usually replacing the spark plugs with the spark plug wires and also the distributor cap.

The easiest way to go about doing this is to first unplug each sparkplug wire, one at a time, and replace the spark plugs first.

Then Replace the sparkplug wires next one at a time, unplugging them from the distributor cap and spark plug. Each time you take a wire off the distributor and spark plug. Replace it immediately with the new wire that is the same length as the old wire. This will save a lot of confusion.

After replacing the wires next replace the distributor cap along with the rotor. The rotor should easily be able to just be pulled off and pop a new one on. When you remove the cap make sure you leave the wires connected still until you align the new cap with the old one. There is usually a marking of some kind on the side of the cap the you should view along wide the old cap to be able to place the right wire with the right outlet in the cap. One by one take the wire from the old cap and connect them to the new cap.

After all wires are on, pop the cap back on the distributor and snap down the clamps that snap the cap into place.

That's all there is to it.
